SexTech 2009 - let me first say anytime you bring SEX, and the INTERNET together at one place, with youth is a great place to be!!! So I have to start and say THANK YOU AT OUR BIG BROTHERS AND SISTERS AT AFY (Advocates for Youth) for allowing me to attend...
SexTech brings together STD/HIV Prevention using Social Networks (like MySpace, Facebook and fun sites like that)... I was afforded the opportunity to sit in numerous sites... Back at home, I am an HIV/AIDS Educator specifically focused on At Risk Communities. One of our greatest At Risk Community is our MSM (Men that have Sex with Men). With that in mind, the most enjoyable breakout session discussed a Chicago based initiative entitled My-Peeps (www.my-peeps.org), a site created by young men and health educators. The mission of MyPeeps is to spread around the most reliable sexual health info for guys between 16-20. Right now, the site/intervention is still in the pilot stage. Beginning with in-depth interviews with 21 HIV positive YMSM (Young Men who have Sex with Men) ages 18 – 24, where they discussed how they contracted the disease.
I enjoyed the presentation on this intervention especially since they discussed the feelings of HIV positive YMSM. The format of the intervention placed me in the mind of another effective intervention that the CDC already support called 3MV (Many Men, Many Voices) which tackles changing different mindsets that AAMSM (African American MSM) around safer sexual activities and stigma centered around having HIV.
The conference, was great and I cant wait to attend next year...
