Quick update: I went out with a friend to distribute condoms a few days before Valentine's Day. The first place we stopped by was the undergraduate library, since we knew our fellow students would be too busy studying! The reactions we received when we said, "Would you like some free condoms?" were varied. A lot of people felt embarrassed that we were asking them so directly, and others just simply said, "Sure," and took a few.
Their reactions surprised me so much. I was a part of this student organization on campus that did exactly this -- distribute condoms. I knew the student health service had an office that let students take condoms for free, but I would say about 10% of campus are aware of this. I thought sex was an issue that was open to discussion on a college campus such as mine (University of Michigan). Apparently not. Maybe I asked the wrong persons. Either way, it was definitely a learning experience, and I have yet to distribute the remaining 300 condoms.
Next time I plan to make large posters and maybe t-shirts that say, "The Great American Condom Campaign," and set up camp in a large student union...
I can definitely understand why you were suprised to see your classmates' embarassment. But that's why you're doing this. You're promoting honest and open conversations about sexual health through your direct outreach. Keep up the great work, and keep us posted!
It is natural because of our messed up culture that some people are embarrased about taking condoms, but you did great work! At my high school the principle and health teachers have condoms in their offices, and students can take them whenever they want. It def takes the stigma away from getting condoms, which is why the GACC is so important.
