When I was in seventh or eighth grade, a group of people came to my middle school to give us what was basically sex ed. Our school couldn't call it sex ed because our county didn't allow it, so instead we were informed that it was called "Abstinence Education." Remembering this "education" makes me realize just how badly we need comprehensive sex ed programs.
It was a three day course that was done during our fun classes. The first day, the men introduced themselves and told us that they weren't going to tell us how sex works, but why it's dangerous. They gave us a brief overview of the entire course, telling us that sex before marriage will lead to several diseases and probably (No, not possibly, probably) death.
The second day they taught us about STDs. It was informative, and they gave us a good bit of information about the STDs that are out there. Then they told us the ways you get these STDs.
By having sex before marriage or homosexual sex.
That's right, the ONLY way you can get an STD is by having sex before you're married or being gay. You see, all people who have sex before marriage automatically get Syphillis for their sin, and men who have sex with men are given AIDS by Jesus because homosexuality is bad. Of course, I'm exaggerating a bit, but that was the message that they sent to the young, impressionable minds in the room.
The final day we signed our abstinence cards. This was a pledge to stay pure until marriage, which is a good pledge to take. Abstienence is the only completely effective way of preventing STDs, but it isn't like not being abstinent will make you die.
Our youth need a better education than this. This is ridiculous.
