At my school, my GSA (Gay-straight alliance), many local public health organizations, and I organized the campus world aids day events. We gave out safer sex kits, condoms, coupons to the nearest Planned Parenthood Location, and pamphlets. We also offered FREE HIV testing and Chlamydia/Gonorrhea testing. Anyone who was tested was automatically entered in a raffle to win gift cards and other prizes. We even had two people dressed up in Penis costumes handing out condoms, and information encouraging people to get themselves tested. After gettnig tested we gave everyone a sticker that said "I got myself tested."
It was incredibly successful. Students, Faculty and staff all over the campus were seen wearing these stickers and many, who did not get tested stopped by for information for themselves and their friends. It was awesome!
All over campus people were talking about this event and posting about it on facebook. Because this was such a big success, we are going to host two more GYT (get yourself tested) events on campus next semester.
Working with local organizations like the Diversity Center, the AIDS taskforce, Planned Parenthood, etc was incredibly helpful. As a SafeSite this opportunity was amazing for condom distribution!
Whenever I have parties at my house or whenever a friend of mine hosts a party, I always make sure to provide condoms and safer sex information pamphlets to all of the guests. This semester, I hosted a party at my house and while all of the guests were socializing I told everyone that we were going to play a game/have a contest.
I brought out two of our wooden penis models from my HIP kit and told the guests to form two teams. Each member of the teams would have to correctly put a condom on the penis model and explain the steps in the process. The team with the most correct applications would win a prize (a safer sex kit which included condoms, lube, dental dams, latex gloves, pamphlets, and a coupon for $10 off at the local Planned Parenthood).
At first some were put off by this challenge but almost everyone participated. After everyone was finished I demonstrated the correct steps for condom application, awarded the winner and passed out free condoms to everyone.
It was really fun and everyone left the party with valueable information and the necessary materials to keep themselves safe. All in all, the party was a great success!
So, since I am an orientation leader at my school I get to meet all of the new students first. I take full advantage of this opportunity because it enables me to spread the word about my also being a GACC Safesite and I am able to offer them free condoms and safer sex info on the spot.
At first some students are a little put off by my up-front nature on this subject, but after I explain the importance as well as my availabilty as a resource they are put at ease.
The LGBT group on campus is going to partner up with me for the upcoming orientation dates so that we can set up a table to not only address safer sex, but also equality. the more organizations that are willing to collaborate, the better!
So the end of the semester is always a hectic time in a student's life so why not make contraceptives one less thing to worry about.
In the last week of the semester my school's campus activities board hosts what we call "stress free zones". Here, students can get free massage from professionals, reflexology, free food, coffee, and many other giveaways.
So, I set up a table during this event with a big sign that said free condoms and handed them out to whomever approached, along with my business cards that indicate my position as a safesite--and their ability to obtain free condoms from me in the future. It was a great success. I handed out safer sex information about STD testing and locations for testing, how to use a condom pamphlets, etc.
In order to atteract attention to my being a Safesite, I had one of my classmates dress up wearing a Penis costume in our student center at my college. I had HER shout condom slogans like "don't be silly protect your willy" and help me to distribute condoms to students in our student center. I also passed out business cards to students that had my contact information and my title as a safesite listed. This was a great success. I have done this twice this semester and people cannot stop talking about it. People on campus often come up to me and say "I know you, you're the condom lady, thanks for the free condoms!" or things of the likeness.
Next year, If I am able to be a safesite again, I am going to get a Vagina/Vulva costume as well as the Penis Costume to help me distribute condoms. It should be amazing!
It is holiday time and while everyone is frantically shopping for gifts, students know what to expect from me for Christmas. Along with Holiday cards, or in tiny gift bags I have delivered "Christmas Condoms". While the students know that these condoms are not a "generous gift from me" it is another discrete way to pass out condoms to shy students, and to provide safer sex information.
Happy Holidays
It has become well known that I am a SafeSite and that I am not affraid to ask someone if they need/would like condoms. Often, when we are out for coffee, at a meeting or event, I will randomly ask the group if anyone needs condoms. Usually many people will raise their hand and I will pass around a container filled with condoms and tellt hem to take what they need. After this, I announce that if anyone needs condoms in the future, or is uncomfortable discussing this in front of a group they should contact me later, at which time I pass out my business card that has my cell phone and emaill address on it.
Because of this, students will say that they are coming over my house for "coffee" "tea" or something like that, when really they are just coming over to obtain condoms. It is a great and discrete way to distribute condoms to shy students. Also, it is well known that I love coffee, tea and house guests so it not unrealisitic to assume that students are acutally over for coffee or tea.
