We all love Target. Target is the supercenter where everything can be found, and let’s be honest, we feel a bit classier when we shop there as opposed to Wal-Mart (no offense). But with its latest contribution to a PAC supporting a gubernatorial candidate with more than a few hardcore conservative views, it leaves me wondering Target shares those views as well.
With $150,000 in donations, Target has joined a number of corporations funding “Minnesota Forward”, a business-oriented PAC promoting GOP candidate Tom Emmer. Although their surface motivation is to promote candidates that want to further economic growth, the candidate doing so has another side to his platform. Tom Emmer is known for more than a desire to cut taxes, but rather as an extreme social conservative. He is anti-abortion, against the minimum wage for service workers who get tips, and much, much more. As several sites (noted below) recently reported, Emmer actively supports and donates to a “stealth” Evangelical ministry whose leader professes that Muslims’ action in executing homosexuals is “moral”, and teaches that Jews essentially get what they deserve for “killing Christ”. According to Emmer, such folk are “good people”, although most of the general population would deem them as extremists, and go about their business.
I am not in any way saying that you should stop buying from Target, or that their donation is meant to deter their socially liberal customers from future patronage. What I am saying, is that there must be action taken to allow Target to explain their reasoning for this hefty contribution, and hopefully retract the money as has happened with other corporations in the past.
