Gureje, Degenhardt, Olley et al. (2007) in studying the epidemiology of substance use and substance use disorders in Nigeria during the early 21st century, found out that alcohol was the most commonly used substance, the next most common were sedatives and cannabis. Young people in Nigeria due to mostly peer pressure indulge in the use of these drugs. Males are more often likely than females to be users of cannabis as gotten from investigations. The prevalence of both alcohol and tobacco is highest between middle aged adults. Moslems were much less likely to use alcohol than persons of other faith, but no such association was found for tobacco. Alcohol is found to be the most psychoactive drug in Nigeria. Most young people especially college students in many countries are at elevated risk for heavy drinking with immediate health risks such as drink driving and other substance use and longer term risks such as alcohol dependence. Overcoming addictive behaviors such as substance use, alcohol consumption, and smoking poses a major challenge for those who are dependent on those substances as well as for professional helpers. Most youths even after being rehabilitated return back to drugs! The problem of drugs has become more critical in present days. Should we still continue managing our rehabs or what else can be done to check drug use in Nigeria? Prevention activities, fighting the supply, making the people not want it/discouraging the use and providing treatment services for drug users? Are these the solutions? We need help! My friend went mad from the use of cannabis and is currently in a psychiatric hospital. A lot of young people are getting close to madness and their graves! What can be done to stop the millions who are drug dependent?

Thanks for sharing this perspective, It definitely neccessary for our country Nigeria to go beyond enforcement that we do now to the actual root causes and have a definitive plan to mitigate the challenges of drug use amongs young people. It is no more news the connection of drug use and SRH issues and right among young people in our country
