What can we learn from the cancellation of the prom at Constance McMillen’s Mississippi high school?
Constance rules!
This is why Congress has to pass the Student Non-Discrimination Act
Hope isn’t lost -- look how many folks stepped up to hold a non-discriminatory prom!
All of the above

When you got pregnant, all those years ago, I remember your saying that you and your husband had used both a condom and diaphragm with contraceptive jelly. And you were really careful. But you got pregnant anyway! You had tried so hard not to get pregnant but you were so fertile!

You decided to have the baby because you already had one and were thinking of having another, anyway. Which was great because it was your decision to make, and you made it.

Now you tell me that doctors said you would probably never have another baby and the baby was a miracle. That God helped you when you and your husband really wanted that baby and were trying so hard to have another baby! Because babies are God's gift to women.

I call bullshit.

I call reconstruction of the truth.

And now that I know you're anti-abortion, I think this is a grand convenient reorganization of your memories to serve your belief that getting pregnant is something every woman wants to do, though she doesn't admit it or maybe even know it at the time. Her body knows. I should have heard that when you told me I had "baby hips" when you asked me to hold one of your babies for you. You thought you knew better than I did what I wanted.

But that is just wrong, and stupid, and denies the value of my whole existence as a woman who has never had a child, never will have a child, never wanted a child and made damn sure that she used every option available to avoid having a child.

And I knew that if those options didn't work, I'd need an abortion. I wasn't interested in having a child, and didn't think it made any sense to not have sex ever in my life, just on that basis. Having sex doesn't mean I want a baby. It means I want to fuck.

You're right. Women aren't required to have babies. It's crazy to force someone to stay pregnant when they don't want to.
