Near the beginning of the semester, a group that I am an officer for here in Boulder, Colorado at the University of Colorado brought the AIDS Quilt to campus. The AIDS Quilt is the largest display of community art in the world and is comprised on panels made by in memory of those lost to HIV/AIDS by their family and friends. Each panel is added to a quilt square that has 12 panels on it. This year, we were able to bring 25 squares to the campus to be laid out on the main quad. During this, we worked with the ONE campaign and the Boulder County Aids Project to hand out free condoms, lube, and safer sex guides to those walking through the quad.
Although it's a little bit awkward to stick out your hand and ask fellow students if they want condoms, I found that you get used to it and most kids actually take them. Surprisingly enough, I found that most men take them instead of girls who seem to be embarassed by the subject, but I guess thats societal norms for you. I was able to distribute most of my condoms to a greater majority of the CU Boulder campus during this time period, most people also commented that they were "nice" condoms, or "these are good!" The rest I was able to distribute during parties at my house where I have a condom bowl (similar to most people who have potpouri or candy by their front doors) as well as to help restock the condom supplies at the GLBT Resource Center on my campus, in which I am very involved in. Overall, I would say this semester with the GACC was a great success and I was able to effect about 50% of the CU Boulder campus with my distribution technique.
