Monday, November 30th, 2009, I attended my 6:30 p.m. Speech 100 Class. When some of my classmates were volunteering to read their journals, or responses to the readings from our textbooks for credit, I volunteered to do a journal reading, or so my class believed.
Instead, I pulled a shining, silver bowl containing 55 individually wrapped Trojan condoms from my backpack, a stack of World AIDS Day flyers, and my petition paperwork. I had the bowl covered with aluminum foil until I reached the lectern. When I uncovered it, all the women (including my teacher) giggled, and all the boys leaned forward, as if they were craning to hear if and when they were able to take some of the condoms for themselves.
I presented the World AIDS Day information and handed out the materials with the condoms. My classmates were jovial and all spoke openly and supportingly of the hand-out, and of the program. My teacher used my short speech as a strong example of a person's "public voice" versus their "private voice."
I didn't receive extra credit or anything, but I have signatures on the petition. Where do I send those to, now?
Until next time, you stay safe, GACC. Adrian out.
