I received my condoms last semester but decided not to distribute them until this semester so that I could really organize everything. The Health Center at Texas State university does not give out free condoms and did not donate any to me but I talked to them and they provided priniting csts for 100 posters for me along with their in-house graphic designer. The graphic designer also created button graphics for me.
The Alcohol Drug and Resource Center on campus has been really awesome in donating 1000 more condoms! So I've started off with 1500 condoms. I decided to make heart pockets where I have my slogan "Safer Sex is Sexy" on one side and a statistic on the other and the condom inside when handing them out. I have been handing them out every wednesday in the month of Feb. so far, the one time it has been great. People are talking! I see people looking at my posters on campus (which all have different stats on them) and I g up and say things like "Isn't that funny, what do you think?". I've gotten great feedback.
Also, I am in student government on my campus and I passed just this pass monday a piece of legislation that makes the month of Feb. Sexual Health Awareness Month. It didn't come too easy, I had to add an amendment suggested by the girl who started the pro-life movement on campus to add that we would not disregard abstinence (which is true), but I made sure to let her know that I am not supporting or denying any sexual preference, just giving people thetools to be safer if they decide to have sex.
At my booth I have a big banner that says "Safer Sex is Sexy" with a quote below by Lil Wayne "safe sex is great sex so you better use that latex cause you don't want that late text that 'I think I'm late' text". People see the banner from a far and I can see them whispering to friends "does that say sex on it???" YYES it does!
Also at the booth there is a little game to play and if we are slow I make people win the condoms insead of just handing them out. I also recruited 3 health educators from the area to donate their time so that there is always one at the booth giving medical info if people have questions (I'm expertise lies more on the policy side of the spectrum).
The Safer Sex is Sexy Campaign has been a success so far and I will put up pics soon :)
