Have you ever read News of the Wierd?  Well you should, because recently, they printed an article that I really wanted to share with you all about sex education pamphlets produced by Britain's National Health Service of Sheffield.  Now, I bet you're interested.  Well, News of the Wierd is a syndicated column that is printed in my local community newspaper, The Valley Advocate (and probably in your local free paper too).

Here's the story:

Britain's National Health Service of Sheffield issued a "guidance" to schools this summer to encourage teaching students alternatives to premarital sex, including masterbation.  According to the Daily Telegraph, the leaflet (title "Pleasure") contains the slogan "(A)n orgasm a day keeps the doctor away" and likens the health benefits of eating fruits and vegetables, and excercising, to the benefits of masturbating twice a week.  [Daily Telegraph, 7-12-09]
This story was published under the heading "Questionable Judgment?".  I say no!  I think the U.S. can learn a lot from Britain about sex-positivity and healthy living.  And I'm going to tell everyone I know about the preventative health benefits of orgasms.  How about you?

I think that's great. Hiding sexuality and sexual expression and making it a secret has proven to be detrimental. I think that adults need to get over their irrational fears and realize that all people of whatever age deserve the right  to safely express themselves. Learning about your personal sexuality does not always mean that you are having sex. Way to go, Britain!

I love this!  Masterbation has such a dirty rep that it doesn't deserve!  I totally believe that if "getting off" was less of a taboo, there would be less people having sex before they were ready.

I completely agree with the both of you! You inspired me to write a post about this subject. I think its quite interesting and how it has/has not been included in the sexual health education.

I agree with all of you. Americans stand on "purity" is hurting young people. Masturbation should not be taboo. Young people should know masturbation is completely healthy and not a bad thing.

This is, quite simply, a big step in the right direction. The tabboo on human sexuality has only ever served too disenfranchise and alianate those who are unsure of themselves, and create confusion, which leads to fear, which leads to anger, violence, and all of that unsavory sort of stuff. America could learn a thing or two.
