If you didn't catch Ellen the other day you missed out on something extremely special!

Gareth Thomas, a rugby player, recently came out and has become the single openly gay male athlete on any major sports team in the world.

Hey Folks!

Lexi here again! Yesterday I had organized an event for Transgender Day of Remembrance over here in San Francisco! It turned out well and we had a moderately good crowd come out for our workshop, panel, Q&A session and then performance by Nicole! Nicole is a transwoman who actually has a documentary out about her and she is just the sweetest thing!! After her performance we did a memorial march around campus.

The things I want to share with you all today are:

Nicole's documentary which all 6 parts are on youtube:

Hey Ya'll,

Lexi here again. As I sit here on a monday getting over a cold caused by an all-nighter being pulled so I could focus on a research paper that was pushed aside by my organizing and other various passions I decided I'd blog about burnout and self-care!

One of my top issues is not being able to say NO! I always tell people I work with, it's totally okay to say "No" and really if you need to take time for yourself then do it and recover. One of my mentors said to me this week "If you're no good to yourself then you are no good to others and movement building!" So, take time for yourself and take care of YOSELF. because it's important.

I found this article a good long time ago and read it a couple of times because I was suffering the activist burnout and now I need to re-read it again just because I probably have too much on my plate. But here's the article I hope you can grab something useful from it!!

Hey Ya'll!

1) Congrats to my SF Giants for taking the world series!! Woot Woot!

2) As I am thinking about sports and the world series I was on tumblr and came across this article about a trans man playing in the NCAA with his team. He isn't on hormones or else he would not be eligible for the women's league but obviously it's great that he can be out and who he feels he is!
Here's the link: http://www.outsports.com/os/index.php/component/content/article/24-people/338-transgender-man-to-play-for-womens-basketball-team

And here is the NCLR's report on trans individuals in sports: http://www.nclrights.org/site/PageServer?pagename=press_TransgenderStudentAthleteReport100410

Also with upcoming International Transgender Day of Remembrance on Nov. 20th here is a great campaign to get participate in called "Legalize Trans" which rooted from the "Legalize Gay" shirt and works to increase trans awareness but also part of the proceeds go to trans individuals who need help paying for surgeries which many insurances consider "cosmetic" and can get very pricey REAL quick.

Be good, safe, & consentual! ;]

Hey Ya'll,

Lexi again. Today, October 20th, 2010, we are supposed to wear purple for those who took their own lives due to harassment and homophobia. Being who I am I must include transphobia and the need to fight it along with homophobia. Trans, queer, and non-conforming gender folk also suffer from harassment, bullying, and even discrimination from within the “Gay” community itself. So today as we raise awareness of Homophobia and how it has impacted those now 7 youth who have taken their lives, I ask us also to recognize Transphobia within and outside of our community and help fight it along with Homophobia.

Also some ways to support trans folks:

"Legalize Trans Campaign" selling shirts, buttons and more! Some proceeds go to help trans folks pay for their surgeries && you can sign up to "sell" shirts and raise money for your own procedures!!

Hey Ya'll,

Lexi here. Today I got some of the best news of my young trans life!

I GOT CERTIFIED FOR HORMONES!! By my therapist. So that means as of right now that I can go to my primary care provider, talk to him about what hormones do, get my body tested to see if there are any red flags as far as what the cons will be when starting/continuing hormones and how they will affect me overall!!

Something all you trans folks and supporters should know about out there is the "Harry Benjamin Transgender Standards of Care" this is a resource I used to educate myself a little more about transitioning and a really helpful resource is the transsexual road map. http://www.tsroadmap.com/reality/wpath-standards.html

Another valuable resource for coming out as transgender is PFLAG, Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. http://community.pflag.org/Page.aspx?pid=194&srcid=-2

Best of luck Ya’ll!!
