The story is about how older Afghan men have young boys as lovers. Which is all in all its own problem in American culture since it means they are raping these boys. One man says "Whoever wants to show off should have a boy." The young boys usually between 9 and 15 are treated as objects, and the men's reasoning for this is rather interesting.

In their culture women are "unclean" and have to be completely covered from head to toe. A man can not even speak to a woman until after they are married, and they can't even see what the woman they plan on marrying looks like.
Would you marry someone you've never seen before, who's said to be unclean and you've never even talked to?

One man asks how his wife can become pregnant and when given the answer he is disgusted since women are unclean. These men don't want to sleep with women that God has made unclean right? Of course they don't. So many men keep their "boy lovers" even after they are married.

I came across 3 major problems when i read this.
The first of course is rape, molestation, sex slaves, however you want to see it. Underage boys are being raped and molested because its a normal part of their society.

The second problem I came across was equal rights for women, which is also a huge part of their culture, but being a woman I find offensive that someone would say I'm "unclean" just because I'm a woman.

The third problem is that a man didn't even know how to get his wife pregnant, which obviously shows the lack of sex education.

Wow. I didn't know that that was going on and that it was such a huge problem. Thank you for writing about this. Dangerous things like this happen when gender equality and sex education do not exist.

Great post Alex.  Bacha Bazi, or "child play / boy play" is an incredbly disturbing practice.  From what I learned about it, this mainly takes place in the southern part of the country and is tied into economic and social conditions.  I highly reccomend watching PBS's Frontline report on this topic.  Their full episode, "The Dancing Boys of Afghanistan." can be seen online.  You're totally right about the lack of sex education being one of the many problems that allows this practice to continue.

it is supposedly a fringe event stemming from some war barons that decided to enjoy a custom of the places where they stayed at during the wars.  a custom that is actually illegal in the country but really isnt inforced. i do think its terrible and ruins the lives of the boys.
