I am honored and privileged to be able to to interview The Honorable Mary Robinson, former President of Ireland. Mrs. Robinson is the founder of the Mary Robinson Foundation - Climate Justice. She is currently the Chairperson of the Global Leaders Council for Reproductive Health, Honorary President of Oxfam International, Chancellor of University of Dublin, and member of the distinguished group that Nelson Mandela founded — The Elders. The former President is the former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

The former President of Ireland graced the side event hosted by the Population Action International yesterday, December 4, 2011 at the Tropicana Hotel in Durban, South Africa. The Healthy Women, Healthy Planet: Women's Empowerment, Reproductive Health, & Climate Change aims to highlight the cause of women as instrumental in determining a family's ability to survive the impacts of climate change and the urgency for it to be included in the climate negotiations.

Mrs. Robinson is here in Durban for the climate negotiatiors with an aim to rally support among women Ministers and negotiations to include gender and sexual and reproductive health and rights in the bargaining table. Honestly, her presence is very much encouraging and inspring - I am inspired a lot! This Wednesday, she is set to meet with UNFCCC Executive Secretary Christiana Figueres, South Africa Foreign Minister Maite Nkoane-Mashabane, Mexico Foreign Minister Patricia Espinosa and company in a press conference.

Access to reproductive health and family planning is an important part of strengthening women's capacity as leaders in addressing climate change. According to Mrs. Robinson, it is one of the cost-effective mechanism to address climate change. Yet in too many places around the world, that access is limited. In the short interview, she advised us how to effectively engaged our climate negotiators and how we can pass the controversial RH Bill in the Philippines. She did it in 1971, we can do it!
