Today is not an ordinary day. It may seem that your routine is the same. You get your coffee, lag through your daily assignments and work and contemplate what you'll be picking up or cooking for your dinner. But today is a special day. Today we pay tribute to those who have lost their lives to AIDS/HIV, those who continue to struggle and fight, and the families, friends, and support groups to those victims and survivors. We honor them because they are fighting too... fighting to keep their loved one encouraged and inspired to live.
Today, many organizations, companies, and activist, took the time to raise money, collect donations, contribute to the cause, and educate those who are mis-informed or who are completely un-educated when it comes to this disease.
Today we celebrate World Aids Day by inspiring, educating, and empowering those who are still fighting, those who are supporting, and those who lost their lives trying.
FAST FACT:
HIV/AIDS affects more than 41 Million people
The theme for this year's World AIDS Day is "Universal Access and Human Rights."
According to UPI.com, "The United Nations estimates more than 41 million people -- mostly in undeveloped, poor countries -- are infected with the human immunodeficiency virus. About 2 million deaths were attributed to AIDS in 2008. The number of deaths per year seems to have peaked, mainly because of better access to treatment for people in poorer countries"
Wow! What does that say about our resources and medical care for those living with HIV/AIDS?
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon issued a statement that says, in part:
"On World AIDS Day this year, our challenge is clear: we must continue doing what works but we must also do more, on an urgent basis, to uphold our commitment to reach universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support by 2010. This goal can be achieved only if we shine the full light of human rights on HIV. That means countering any form of HIV-related stigma and discrimination. It means eliminating violence against women and girls. It means ensuring access to HIV information and services."
My Thoughts...
This has been a great day for AIDS/HIV awareness. Many new organizations, companies, and activists have come out in support of creating more programs, services, and resources that would be available to those interested in learning more about the disease and its effect in our society and communities.
Let's Celebrate, Empower, Encourage, and Support those who are struggling with HIV/AIDS, who died trying, and those who continue to support and inspire their loved ones to live!
