Happy Friday, Sistahs!

Michelle and I had an inspiring conversation today with C.J., a charismatic peer educator here at the Bacchus & Gamma Conference.

C.J. talked to us about what having a positive body image means to her as a young woman of color. Take a couple of minutes and hear why she wants you to celebrate your beauty!

So ladies...how do YOU embrace or struggle with body image as a woman of color? What do you do if you wake up in the morning and just can't get excited about what you see in the mirror? What do you tell your friends when they're getting down about their hips or their height? What have people told you that's helped, or not helped?

Check out our page on body image for more thoughts!

Flat Booties Anonymous

I have a weird struggle. I am void of curves and it really gets to me at times. When I see women of color on TV, especially music videos, the image is of a woman with never-ending curves. I almost feel like I am not woman enough because I don't have the curves typical of a woman of color, and it makes me insecure! I call it a booty insecurity complex.

When my friends feel insecure I tell them what I honestly find beautiful about them. I also regularly randomly compliment my friends. I think it means more than simple reassurance if someone is feeling insecure. ...

Thanks for such an honest comment, Michelle. I was thinking after I read your post... I bet there are women out there who might think, "No curves? Sounds good to me, I hate my big hips and butt....I want a little waist and smaller thighs!!" I know I used to think this way, and still catch myself feeling down about it from time to time. But that's the thing -- the grass is always greener... it's always so much easier to see the beauty in other people than it is to see the beauty in yourself. That's why I really liked what C.J. had to say about loving what you got. I've come to see that it's confidence... carrying yourself like you love what you got... that is the sexiest. But... easier said than done, for sure!
