Life can be unexpected and very complicated, when you think your making progress that when horrendous event occurs and you realize that there is more work to do. Today while reading the daily news online I came across an article about an Iranian male just 18 yrs old that is falsely accused of sodomy and is sentence to death by the law. Now are your for real, in 2010 we’re still rooted in this backward culture? It pains my heart to know that this young man is being falsely accused and is sentenced to death, but what’s even more shocking is that in Iran men who associate themselves to be homosexuals are sentenced to death, lashed, hanged or stoned to death. The law includes a variety of penalties for different acts: 99 lashes if two unrelated males sleep "unnecessarily" under the same blanket – even without any sexual contact. A boy raped by an adult man would also be lashed if the court decided that he had "enjoyed" the experience. This is just a clear violation of human rights and something needs to be done immediately. What makes the story more interesting is that the young man’s (Ebrahim) had to flee the country and is now living in Europe. But that not all his wife was kidnapped and is taken prisoner.
Despite all efforts to prove his innocence which include the accused victim coming clean and stating that he lied about the whole incident (rape) because his mother told him to, was not enough to free the teenager. Under the “judge’s knowledge” rule the law can make subjective judicial ruling without any conclusive evidence to prove the accused guilty.
When are we going to transcend from our violent, abusive and plain dumb culture norms and beliefs to more equality and justice.
What will you do?
