Every time I listen to the radio I have to shake my head. Many people tell me that I am a prude but I can tell you that is so far from the truth. There are many lyrics on the radio that are inappropriate for young girls and boys. The average child listens to 14 hours of radio a week. When you consider some of the lyrics this is a lot of time children are being hypersexualized. We tell children and young adults that they should not be engaging in sexual acts, however every time they turn on the radio they cannot escape sex.

Here is one example of many of lyrics are on the radio now:

“Cause I may be bad, But I’m perfectly good at it. Sex in the air, I don’t care, I
 love the smell of it
Sticks and stones May break my bones But chains and whips Excite me”
~Rihanna~

It may seem that I advocate for banning this type of music all together but that is not my intent. I think that songs that send such sexual messages should be played at certain time of the day. I also think that parents need to pay attention to the music children are listening to and have conversations with children about what messages these songs send.

Now, honestly, this screams sex! When teens hear this song that is so popular they become more interested in sex. This song is more than sex; it is about S&M. When they hear this “cool” song on the radio they are going to think sex is cool? Young girls and boys are engaging in sex earlier and earlier. Media encourages these activities and songs such as these are toxic to the sexual health of young people.

I agree that parents should be aware of the music their kids listen to, but I do not think that certain music makes young people more interested in sex. They're already interested in sex.
