Here at Stetson University we are well into our fall semester & the Office of Health has been busy teaching our Hatters about sexual health as well as many other aspects of their wellness. Many of our presentations for the beginning of the year have included much information on condom usage & sexual health. For example, our Buzz presentation that we give to the incoming freshman every year talks about all the places you can get free condoms on campus. Not too long after the Buzz, we had our first annual Party Safety Workshop that was open to all Stetson students. From the title of this workshop, I am sure you can assume that condoms were a big topic of discussion here. Our Healthy Hatter Wellness Interns had many booths targeting the issues that arise at parties (drugs, alcohol, sex, etc.), one of them being dedicated to condom use and sexual health! Our RA’s here at Stetson are also very informed on the importance of condom usage & have made it a point to make condoms available to all their residents.
When I had a friend from my hometown visit Stetson, she was quite impressed on the beauty of our campus & the ‘cute’ downtown area that we have close by.
When I showed her my dorm building, she was again impressed that there was a bag of condoms where the RA’s post announcements for their residents. She said, “That shows a lot about Stetson.” I retorted with the impression that she was misunderstood at our intentions, “Hey, we are just promoting the practice of safe sex.” She just smiled & said, “That is what I meant! It is great that you care for your peers & acknowledge that sex happens, but to be safe about it.”
We hope to continue our campaign to remind students to “Wrap it before they tap it.” With the design of a new cartoon condom mascot (coming soon!) & more workshops, students will have more aid than ever here at Stetson University to locate condoms & stay informed on sexual health.
