For many in the women’s health community, the election of Barack Obama signals a new era in sexual and reproductive health.

But what exactly does this mean for women and girls around the world?

Just days after his swearing in, President Obama repealed the Global Gag Rule, effectively expanding opportunities and funding for family planning worldwide with the help of the U.S. government. This monumental change in policy may be just the beginning of new leadership for an issue that affects millions of people, but that received little attention in the previous administration.
