Good ol' family. They are supposed to be there for you during the good times and bad times. They are suppose to nurture you and give you the best opportunities, right?
I believe that and i'm sure most of you believe that!
But a thing that is different from culture to culture is the way in which cultures talk or teach about sex. Some cultures are more open to talking about sex and protection. An example of this is the American culture. Many of my friends have had parents who have sat down with them and given them the "birds and the bees" talk. By the way, I've always wanted to know why it is called the "birds and the bees." can anyone tell me this?
On the other hand my parents, who are from Central America would never or will ever mention the word SEX in my house. To do so would probably mean 2012 is real and the world is coming to an end. No, really! I think that since i'm Latino it is fair for me to say that in my culture it is a taboo to talk about sex. You just don't mention that! I also know that not everyone in my culture is the same and some are wiling to talk to their children. I'm happy for them.
Luckily for me, my brother was the one who talked to me about sex. Currently, he is 28 years old and he has seen what not using protection or not talking to adolescents about sex can do. He has had friends who got pregnant or contracted diseases. He doesn't want that for me or anyone that he knows for that matter. I think that this is why I am proud of my culture. More and more people are realizing what the lack of sexual education for do to you. My culture is being more open minded!
Now I/we just need to give them more information, because unfortunately Latinos are one of the minorities most affected by the lack of sexual education.
