I was watching TV the other day and this commercial appeared.

(If the video doesn't show up above, then click on this link to be directed to the video)

I was shocked. According to Amanda McDonnel-Parry on The Frisky, Folgers has a history of creating sexist commercials. (Which makes me think about the fact that my mom usually starts to tear up after such commercials). And after searching for this one on youtube I saw a wide arrange of them.

But upon first seeing this I was completely caught off guard. That the woman would tell her father that he didn't have to worry about her anymore because she is engaged shocked me. I assumed I had misunderstand the commercial, I was just surprised that it was even on TV.

By no means do I think that we have created a society in which sexism is no longer a problem. Sexist attitudes and beliefs are seen on a daily basis in interactions with other people, on television, in the movies etc. But really with this commercial, really? I thought we were at least passed sexism that is this blatant.

What are everyone else's reactions to this commercial?

I didn't see it until you pointed it out. I don't know if I'm offended by it, but I'm glad you're bringing it up.

I'm glad you pointed it out.  I wouldn't have noticed otherwise (mostly because I don't watch much television...)

In response to both comments. You both mentioned that you had not noticed it.
Did you mean that you did not notice the commercial because you hadn't seen it before? Or did you mean you did not notice the sexism upon first viewing the commercial?

Because I thought the sexism was immediately blatant. It implies that women need a man to take care of them and keep them safe. It promotes the traditional nuclear family of the 1950s which has continually worked to oppress people and force them into prescribed gender roles that are dictated by male superiority and female subordination. And has undertones of women as property, first belonging to her father and then given over to her husband.

I guess it's not that surprising though, these sexist attitudes are blatant on television and in commercials.

I meant that I hadn't seen the commercial, nor would I have so I'm glad that you brought it to my attention.

I'm so glad someone posted about this! I hadn't seen it yet. Just last night my roommate yelled down the hallway to me after seeing this commercial to tell me about it. We spent nearly thirty minutes discussing how patriarchic and condescending this and other Folgers commercials are. I was disgusted. I'm curious what organizations Folgers is associated with.

This whole also sort of reminds me of this.
