On last nights Colbert Report Stephen Colbert talked about gay marriage in California, where they recently up help proposition 8. This keeps the ban on gay marriage, and is an unacceptable setback for gay rights and equality . Check out his segment, and be sure to watch the words on the right side of the screen during "The Word":
I think that Colbert does an excellent job mocking the established beliefs on marriage, such as the idea that a bride ought to be a virgin on her wedding night. While I completely respect waiting for sex until marriage and think that is a great choice for some people, in todays world it is an unacceptable standard to impose on all women. While being "plowed in the parking lot of an Arbys" is not how a lot of people want to lose their virginity, teens and young adults can have enjoy sex in a safe and responsible way.
Colbert also mocked the idea that all married couples should have children. Us young people know that this nuclear family idea (one mom, one dad, and 2-3 kids in the suburbs) is NOT the only way a marriage can look. Couples can enjoy a lifelong marriage without children if they chose, and now in 6 states same-sex couples can become married, and raise children, if they so chose. For some reason some people find that notion highly controversial and wrong, but I think that with time, respect, and understanding, we can move away all the bullshit and get past the idea that the nuclear family is the only way to go.
I'm really glad that Colbert covered gay marriage in "The Word", he raised a lot of good points in the way that only he can do.
