Just a few months ago vibe magazine put out an article by the name of "Mean Girls of Morehouse" the article was based on the high growing gay population at Morehouse College (One of the Nations Top Historically Black Colleges and Universities). Lots of speculation was out about this article both students and faculty were upset that this "Issue has come to light" as many quoted. I asked a few of my fellow Morehouse brothers how they felt about the situation. There responses were as followed:

  • "Now all the "homos" are gonna think they can come here"
  • "Morehouse needs to go back to the interview process and stop this ish"
  • "I did not come to Morehouse to ganged up by a bunch of gay dudes"
  • "Chrissy I'm just gonna be real with you, some of those dudes are at the time they just need to transfer to Spelman"
All of these answers surprised me and to be honest pissed me off. Morehouse along with Spelman has some of the highest test scores, GPA, and graduation rates out of most HBCU's, and to be honest they could not have gotten here without the help of many of their gay population. I argued with the boys for quite some time as to how they treat the gay population. Many of them again said they should be "kicked out" and put on "probation until they got it together". What all of these guys failed to realize it that now matter how they felt about these guys they have a lot to do with all the Morehouse College has accomplished thus far. They also failed to realized that Morehouse's gay population is also the ones with some of the highest GPA's in their class. My ending statement to these boys was as followed: "If they are the reason you can go around and brag about being the number one liberal arts school for black males then yall just accept them and get over it". The boys of course has much more to say as they always do but it was clear the thought of my statement was still in there minds. The main point was at least gay black males have a school where they fell they can do well and be respected by society.

It makes me sad that the people you talked to were homophobic, but on the other hand, I'm glad that your school in general is welcoming to gay men.

It is so hypocritical to me, ironic, and quite sad, that a group of people who attend a school that was founded as a refuge for African Americans who were persecuted by American society, are turning around and projecting that same persecution onto another group of people.
