In light of all of the “teabaggers” rallying and complaining over the people in power, I would like to bring to light someone who maybe doesn’t have as much power as the president but enough influence over people to cause a considerable amount of harm.

Pastor Steven Anderson of Tempe, Arizona, leads the Faithful Word Baptist Church, a loony, right-wing, god-smiting, hate church that preaches and prays for, “Barack Obama to die and go to hell.” He became relevant when Christopher Broughton, a member of the Faithful Word Baptist Church, brought an assault rifle to an Obama health care rally. He has ties to anti-government groups and was part of that day’s publicity stunt organized by Ernest Hancock, a conservative talk show radio host. It’s ironic how people who are pro-life will threaten to kill someone if they attempt to provide health insurance to millions of people.

I would also like to mention as a part of the story the overt prevalence and signs of racism as a part of these anti-Obama rallies. AZcentral reports on Christopher Broughton:
Although he is African-American, Broughton said race is not a factor in his beliefs. He said during the rally several people told him that he should be supporting Obama because he is Black. He called the idea preposterous. "I am an American. The color of my skin shouldn't even matter."
Not only is Anderson praying for the death of President Obama, but he believes that if someone murders an “abortionist” or someone who is gay, it should not be considered murder. He’s apologetic towards people who murder heroes like Dr. George Tiller and preaches that not only should more doctors die but that their deaths be considered “legal.” It’s his belief that people who are abortion doctors and who are advocates for abortion and who are openly gay should be taken to court and whose judgments should entail the death penalty. Did I mention he was pro-life?

The reason why I bring this despicable man up is because he is among the people like Glenn Beck and Limbaugh who have no remorse over what consequences their hateful rhetoric has. We should be weary of the people in power, yes, but we should also be aware of the people who cross the line and threaten our lives and well-being. They influence people, who lack the ability to think for themselves, through the bible and through fears that are not justified or vindicated. Might I also add that these people lack a college education, sometimes even a high school education. I’m not saying it’s impossible to be wise without formal education, many famous people have done it, but when you are considered a leader in politics, morality, and government, you should at least take a course in some kind of history or political science class. At least then, maybe you can learn about Roe v. Wade, the political spectrum, the difference between communism and fascism, right and left, and why I italicized Roe v. Wade. Might I also add that Anderson is not an educated man? According to his website, he boasts that although he has no college degree, he has memorized or what he says, has a “memory” of over 100 bible chapters which include half of the New Testament. I’ve read a lot of the bible and 100 chapters isn’t a lot considering what’s in there.

I really hope that one day people can think for themselves and realize these are not the people to look for when you need your questions on morality and the state of the government answered. Let’s also make sure that no one does anything rash or idiotic any longer as a result of listening to these goofballs.

I don't think formal education is necessarily the only avenue to knowledge and critical thinking, however I can think of many people who would benefit from a US History class. Sarah Palin, for instance, might've known what countries comprise NAFTA, if she'd taken such a class before running for VP. Or, presumably, she did take the class, but was less than interested at the time and failed to brush up on it later.
Then again, if she'd been well-read (like my mother, who never went to college but has more common sense and intelligence than anyone else I know) even without the college degree (in journalism, ironic), she might've avoided the embarrassment of not being able to answer what she reads on a regular basis.
I really enjoyed this article, especially the joke about italicizing :). Nice work!

I agree, formal education isn't necessary for everyone. I do, however, expect people teaching me and teaching others about American principles and politics to have some sort of knowledge about the subject from experience in the field or formal education.

I think you may have achieved the nearly impossible task of finding someone I dislike and disagree with more than Limbaugh.
I hate that there are people who are looking to Steven Anderson for spiritual guidence. I hate that he is teaching children to be so severly homophobic. And I feel so sad for him.
