It’s no secret, folks. GLAD, Gay and Lesbian Alliance and Defenders, has set up a campaign to get all of New England’s states to legalize same-sex marriages by the year 2012. Well, turns out that on June 3rd their work just got a little easier. New Hampshire approved of a marriage equality bill and in my opinion it’s the best one, yet.
At first, when the house and senate approved of same-sex marriage the governor vetoed the bill because it did not include protections for religious groups that don’t approve of same-sex couples getting married. After changing one or two words then adding a sentence, the bill was put up to revote twice and won. The governor signed the marriage equality bill and guaranteed equal rights for same-sex couples and separation of church and state.
Now, I don’t personally care about religious institutions and their homophobia being attacked but now that churches don’t have to worry about being sued for not supporting same-sex marriage, there is nothing to worry about. At least there shouldn’t be for right wingers. By excluding churches from how the government views state marriages, you gain tons of supporters that would have otherwise gone with the side of “protect our churches.” I hope that California learns about this when it puts same-sex marriage back on the ballot. Guarantee equal rights AND Guarantee protection for all homophobic churches. Face it! It’s a useless battle fighting churches. The churches always win in voter initiatives. And just to add the icing on the cake, when we do win back marriage equality in California by voter initiative, we know for sure that it is constitutional to change the constitution by vote because of the ruling the Supreme Court made about Prop 8. The “traditional marriage” supporters will have nothing to defend themselves with!
In case you haven’t heard, Rhode Island is next for the fight for marriage equality. Supporters of a bill that would legalize same-sex marriage met at the statehouse to show their love and solidarity on Saturday. Although the Legislative branch in Rhode Island is mostly Catholic, the people of Rhode Island support same-sex marriage 60% to 40%. After Rhode Island legalizes same-sex marriage, that’s it! The campaign for marriage equality in New England will have been won.
Look out, America! We’re not going anywhere! ; )
