On Thursday, Obama presented his much anticipated speech to the Muslim world in Cairo, Egypt. According to Bill Maher, however, the president left something out that not only the Muslim world needs to learn but the Christian-dominneering Western world.

That’s right! According to Bill Maher, whose show Real Time airs every Friday on HBO, “Abstinence doesn’t work.” Well, at least that’s what I got out of it. It’s something we all know by now but Maher got me thinking about it in a whole new way.

The “sex-drive” is natural in all of us and yet somehow for some reason all of the major religions reject it as something “evil” that must be “contained.” Truth is that our sexual instincts are a great thing and should be moderated. If you don’t want sex, don’t have sex. If you do, wear a condom. Unless you and your partner want kids of course, then that’s you and you’re partner’s choice.

He mentions masturbation and it reminds me of all of the hoopla that went on in my 8th grade class when our religion teacher told us it was against the church. We were thirteen, twelve year-old boys, what do you expect? We don’t learn it, we just do it. It’s a confusing question that many Christian churches quickly answer and that leaves my old college Philosophy teacher baffled. What's so wrong with masterbation?

What’s the point in all this again? The religious right needs to learn a lot of things. One of them being that not only does abstinence not work but trying to force ridiculous rules and punishments upon people who want to moderately express their sexuality is nothing but ridiculous.

I love Bill Maher. :-)
I think he, and you, are so right about this. Sex is natural. Nothing has ever stopped people from doing it, and nothing will. Trying to make it a sin is kind of ridiculous. If you want people to be responsible when it comes to sex, you have to do it fairly and intelligently. What religion (in general at least) is trying to do to it today is definitely neither of those. I hope to see that change in my lifetime. *fingers crossed*
