Blog - Amplify your voice

Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at 5:58:00 PM EDT

My name is Anibal Hurtado.

I feel like my school has disrespected me.
I am a transgender student, female-to-male or (unknown, 3rd gender)

As many of you know I am currently running in the ASI elections for the position of the director of Legislative Affairs.

Without prior knowledge, the ballot via blackboard had my name under Alicia Hurtado.
Because I am transgender I refuse to go under my legal name, and I made that clear in the application that I do not want to go as my legal name but as ANIBAL Hurtado.

Also, the school newspaper has published my legal name WITHOUT MY CONSENT.

I feel horrible, and discriminated against.

I do not present myself as Alicia.
I keep the knowledge of my legal name extremely personal, and because of they're mistake, I feel like my voice does not matter. That I have been dehumanized. My voice was not taken into consideration at all during this decision making process.

How many voices like mine have been silent?

My name is ANIBAL Hurtado.

I am running for Director of Legislative Affairs as part of the ¡WE MATTER! Slate (team). I have witnessed first hand the way LGBT issues are just brushed under the table.

I am transgender, and I'm willing to come out and say that CSU East Bay has not made me feel safe, and that ASI has done nothing to bring up awareness of LGBT issues on campus, and has given too much responsibility to the Queer/Straight Alliance to educate the rest of the school. When the electoral committee (picked by ASI) and Student Life and Leadership should be much more aware of LGBT issues.

My name is Anibal Hurtado.

I am transgender.

My Voice will not be silenced.

My name is Anibal.

With this complaint/statement I want to:
1. Raise awareness of the LGBTQ climate on campus

2. Publish this on social networks as well as newspapers (the pioneer), and news websites/blogs (amplifyyourvoice.org)

3. Create a policy name change option for students that are transgender but are unable to legally change their name.

4. Create a safe space for students that are transgender.

5. Push forward for a LGBTQ Resource Center on campus

(if elected or not elected).

But ultimately I need more statements, responses to Homophobia/Transphobia on our campus in order to push this agenda forward.

Feel free to repost my statement.

Have to change my name legally in order to change my name on black board. :[
(can't change my name on blackboard)

I'm sorry that your school is treating you this way. I think it's important that you're reaching out to our community, and keeping CSU East Bay accountable. Please keep us posted!

Hey you.  I sent off a letter to the administration and the head of the student newspaper.  How did it all turn out?

it's still turning out. It was a start to really see what is going on at my school, me and a group of people are working on some policy changes for our campus.

Unfortunately I did not win the election, but that is ok, the school newspaper only posted one person's letter, which was nice of them, although there was no apology, for the newspaper, there was an apology for the ballot, but their excuse was that they didn't have enough time, although they did put someone else's nickname who was cisgendered on the ballot.
