Like human beings, activities, events, concepts, promotions, among other things have been given birth dates or specific days/weeks/ month when we should celebrate their existence....So for example we have "Safer Sex Week,Cancer Awareness Month..." But why do we set these dates and how do we go about choosing them?

Some may say these dates are set to do exactly what birthdays do,....remind you of your existence and in some cases provide a platform for one to judge its success versus failure. Either way they should have some significance but should the significance only be memorable for that day/ week/month or should it be all year round. Personally I think it should be a constant reminder all year round, and just as important each day of the year....some might say that there is no possible way to dedicate anyone thing for a year, as it wouldn't create  a balance ground for all other topics and what have you etc and that is understandable and agreeable BUT are we allowing others to become slaves on this one day/week/ month celebration, whereby these are the only times people hear or see serious and meaningful activities highlighting and educating them about the seriousness of the  problems we face?
How often do we change face on these people to join in another weeks celebration, neglecting the previous week's activities. It is with much insight that ask these questions, as even I, am guilty of such. We often become so bombarded with so many different activities that we can only manage to dedicate a day or week or month of each year to engage in or promote or disseminate information related, when in truth and in fact we should try and promote it all year round.

On the other hand, one might say its better to try once than never (as it has some value), and while I commend our work for trying, given the limited resources let us try to encourage, promote and be mindful of our duty on a whole all year round....let us promote safer sex even when its not safer sex month or week or day:)......that way we'll be constant reminders in people's lives....

JUST FOOD FOR THOUGHT.........

That being said Safer Sex week has been going great in Jamaica so far, they( Cheif planners) have been pulling on influential sources to disseminate the information, as well as using youth friendly but simultaneously informative techniques to reach out to the portion of the population at risk: Youths....The efforts of those behind the creative mastermind should be commended, as all brackets of socialization are being utilized from: media, peers, parents, governmental and non governmental bodies and institutions of learning....and the general audience seems to be very receptive....JSTAR recently went and participated in a Safer Sex week expo/exhibition put n by the Ministry of Education among others, held last Friday, where we not only peer counseled but became friends of our fellow Youths... it was very eye opening, even though i wasn't able to part take in the entire festivities as the enthusiasm was evident on all the faces. Many persons where also, curious about and eager to get involved in similar groups like our Advocacy Group.

Overall I would say Safer Sex Week has been a success thus far!
