When it comes to sex education in Texas public schools, most students are getting abstinence only curriculum that shies away from educating them on contraceptives, and other methods of birth control. Because Texas has one of the highest teen birth rate in the country, this fact is of concern. At Texas Freedom Network's Youth Leadership Council, we make efforts to educate Texans on the importance of comprehensive sex education and hope to create change in Texas legislation.
One campaign the council is focusing on this semester is the Education Works! postcard campaign. The postcard lists important facts about comprehensive sex education and how it relates to Texas. We hope to send the postcards to politicians running for office in the coming year to let them know that there are many Texans who do indeed support comprehensive sex ed.
Two weeks ago, after being inspired by a fellow council member, I went door to door at a resident hall at my university to get signatures for Education Works!. After explaining to my peers some of the facts and figures on sex education in Texas, I asked them to sign. This was the first time I had ever done any door to door signing, and I have to say I enjoyed it thoroughly. It gave me a chance to meet new kids on campus, and also get a feel for how college students feel about sex ed. While some people disagreed with me and did not wish to sign, I enjoyed talking to kids with varying views on the topic.
All in all, the door to door event was successful, and I look forward to trying this again later in the year at another residence hall.
