“You Wanna Hook up?”
Has the decision to have Sex become part of a modern day fad? Even with the present knowledge of 1 in 4 teens (ages 14-19) being infected with a Sexual Transmitted Disease and Teen Pregnancy rates having risen to ridiculous numbers, teens are having more unprotected sex than ever before. For teens it'as the norm to hook up with a person at parties and other social events. As an easy one night of pleasure this practice relieves the participants of any commitment after a night of excitment. Often times teens drink or do drugs to loosen up and in because of this influence they may not be able to make concious decisions. But, teens know the consequences of unprotected and unplanned sex. Don’t they?
What is seemingly believed to be common sense to teenagers is obviously not so common. Only 61% of sexually active teens reported having used a condom the last time they engaged in sexual activity. 22.5% of sexually active students had used drugs or were drinking alcohol before the last time they had sex. Teens are taking advantage of situations giving them the opportunity to have sexual relations and taking part in these risky behaviors without the safety net of condoms, birth-control, and other dependable contraceptives. Then to take the already, possibly, life changing engagement to a more threatening danger level, Throw in some Booze!
Without the learned knowledge of the consequences follow unprotected, irresponsible sexual activity, teens can merely act on curiosity, unaware that they may be taking their own life or condemning themselves to a life of unprepared parenthood, by making that one mistake.
The question remains, What is the solution? Do we leave the fate of our future youth in the hands of the whim based popular desire?
Is it the responsibility of the surrounding Adults? or Do we merely assume that those teens are inborn with the ability to make the responsible, mature decision of SEX?
