Answer:  ‘Baylor is a Christian school for Christians, not a Gay school for Gays’ as one of our more brazen commenters (read troll) has so eloquently pointed out.  This logic would be flawless if it were the case that the qualities of Gayness and Christian-ness were actual opposites.  This is not the case, however.

Some Christians view homosexuality as a sin, and some do not.  This is one of the most prevalent debates heard around Baylor regarding LGBT rights.  Is homosexuality a sin?

The thing that most Baylor students seem to miss while forming their judgments about this issue is the frame in which the debate is being held.  The gay students and their allies are arguing that homosexuality is not a sin, meaning that based upon their Christian beliefs, homosexuality is not a sin.  That’s right.  These students are Christian, and many of them chose to come to Baylor because it is a Christian University.

Question: But the Bible clearly says that homosexuality is a sin. How can they consider themselves Christian and followers of the Bible while living a life of sin?

Answer: Of the large amount of verses in the Bible, only 6 or 7 of them actually deal with anything related to Homosexuality.  Jesus and the Jewish prophets do not address the issue in any of their writings.  The original Hebrew and Greek are not as clear-cut as one might think when reading an English translation.  Some of the verses used to condemn homosexuality can be translated in ways that not only remove the negativity towards homosexuality, but make more sense culturally in context to the time they were written.

There are many examples of the Bible being used to support hatred and cultural superiority.  Perhaps the most relevant to this situation is how the Bible has been used to support slavery, racism, and segregation.  Today, the idea that the Bible could support such heinous beliefs and practices is seen as an insult to most Christians and Christianity.  Sadly, history reveals a bitter truth.

You shall not intermarry with them, giving your daughters to their sons or taking their daughters for your sons

-Deuteronomy 7:3

Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots? Then also you can do good who are accustomed to do evil

-Jeremiah 13:23

Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers. He also said, 'Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem. May God extend the territory of Japheth; may Japeth live in the tents of Shem and may Canaan be his slave –Genesis 9:25-27

It is verses such as these that abolitionists and anti-Racists come up against in their fight for equality of the races, verses used out of their historical and cultural contexts to explain a modern day issue.  The verses rallied against Homosexuality are no different.  They are misuses of the Bible to support a particular point of view fueled by hate and ignorance.

 …

If all of those reasons weren’t enough to make a person think twice before condemning Baylor’s homosexual students, check this out.  The Bible also says the following things are sins.  How many people avoid these things?

Divorce is strictly forbidden in both Testaments, as is remarriage of anyone who has been divorced

–Mark 10:1-12

Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard

–Leviticus 19:27

Likewise I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, modestly and discreetly, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly garments

-1 Timothy 2:9

If a man dies childless, his widow is ordered by biblical law to have intercourse with each of his brothers in turn until she bears her deceased husband a male heir

–Mark 12:18-27

[The person] that is without sin among you, let [them] first cast a stone  -John 8:7*

I really wish that people would stop using the Bible to show evidence that homosexuality a bad thing. It's not. The Bible was supposed to make people's lives better, right? People have really screwed up religion, on the whole. It's unfortunate.

I totally agree.  It's ridiculous how much hatred and cruelty has come into being in the name of religion.

Another answer:  As much as I wanted a Christian school, I also wanted a cheap school.
It's easy for a lot of overwhelmingly wealthy Baylor students to forget that not everyone has the choice to go to any school they want. People have to balance financial concerns.
And the answer was Baylor gave me the most money.
