On February 17th, in the midst of the war on women and birth control, students and other young folks rallied on the UT Austin campus in support of birth control access. There were many young speakers (including our own amazing Mackenzie) who all did an outstanding job. Plus, Cecile Richards was the special guest speaker at the event. Needless to say, the rally was great success!
I was really excited to attend and show my support on this issue because I am a woman and I use birth control. Walking up to the event site, I noticed a group of people protesting the event and of course, they were pro-life/anti-choice Catholics. For those of you who don't know, I am a born and raised Catholic. Even though I am not in church every Sunday and I obviously don't side with the church on a wide variety of issues, I do consider myself devout. Walking by the group of protesters stirred up mixed emotions. On one hand I felt ashamed and on the other I felt extremely proud. Proud because I was there to represent the Catholics who believe in responsible and affordable health care.
So guess what 2012 Candidates? I am a Latina. I am a woman. I am a student. I am a Catholic. I am a voter. I depend on birth control and I am watching.
