how's it going everyone!
So, i suppose i am a little late posting my first blog entry. But I just found out that site registration is working again. I should probably check my email more ...
First, here is a little info. about me. My name is RVa. I go to Virginia Commonwealth University, in Richmond, Va. I am an economics major. Leverage finance gets me hot. I enjoy playing the bass. I've been playing for around 5 years. I love <jazz3. I am an avid reader. Du Bois and Fitzgerald are my favorites. I find the ignorance on sex education that is passed on through our public schools appalling. I decided to apply and help Great American Condom Campaign and Amplify, because too often I see people my own age and also grown adults who haven't the smallest inkling of the repercussions of having unprotected sex.
I have decided to hand out the condoms a little different than other people on Amplify (see steffsteff's "less than three days" post), and I am trying to make my box last and be most effective. When I first receive the package, I walked around Richmond. And I asked locals and VCU students "where are people most likely to participate in unprotected sex?" And like I expected the answers I received were very different: Frat parties, Vietnamese association social nights, art exhibit opening night parties, and every assortment of rave/dance party that goes on every night in any of the 4-5 clubs in walking distance. But still the question stood. Where could I go and most effectively stop the ghastly act of unprotected sex? So, I did a little first-hand research.
In a two week period, I threw myself into the Richmond party scene and went to every single party/ social humanly possible. I went to every rave, dance, rugby, random asian get-together, frat, and pasta party I could find. And after this time, the answer was easy. NOWHERE in Richmond are there as many sexually charged college students than at Henrock (Dj Gumby just has what all the girls want).
Anyway, my first attempt at distribution was February 12 at the Bagel Czar. I gave condoms to the first 100 people in the building. I couldn't have asked for a better reception! Everybody was stoked, especially when they found out they were ultra-thins (although a few were bothered because of the unsettling amount that happen to break during sex). Some grad students from Medical College of Virginia (MCV) were so excited that they offered to donate additional condoms, so that I could continue passing them after I eventually ran out.
Later on that night, I walked into the bathroom. And over the bass and screams coming from the dance floor, I heard a very faint moan "uhhhhhhhhhh" coming from one of the urinals. But instead of the general malaise of disgust that usually takes over my body, I smiled. Because I knew, they were playing safe.
I would really appreciate if people commented, so that I can have an active discussion on the most affective ways to educate on safe sex. I wrote this pretty fast, so please no flames! I will update within the next week!
Oh, and again, I want to give a BIG thank you to Trojan and all their munificence for donating the condoms and helping spread the message of safe sex. Spread love, not STDs
