The other day I was at home when my mom pulled out a permission slip for my sister to take a sexual education course when she returns to school in August. Now my sister is only eight years old and will be in the third grade next year, so I was shocked that the school was starting sexual education as early as the third grade. I remember that it was fifth grade when I took my first sexual education course! I questioned my mom’s decision bout enrolling my sister in the class, but when I saw my sister dance and sing songs like “Daddies Home” and she actually knew what the song was talking about I begged my mom to sign her up for that class. I had to remind my self that times have changed and children are exposed to so much via of the Internet, cell phones, and television. So early education IS necessary in order to prevent these kids from doing things they have no business doing. But still the third grade?????? What does that say about our society; that we have to start sexual education classes in the third grade! It is amazing for me to see how many musical artists promote sexual activity in their music but none of them are on the front lines fighting for sexual education. Now that issue it self is a whole another blog!

Did you look at what kind of information the class would include?

I was relatively sheltered growing up. I wasn't allowed to watch PG-13 movies until I was 11 or 12, we never had cable, and we never really listened to very violent or sexual explicit lyrics. When I was in sixth grade (meaning I was 10 or 11), I heard a girl my age in the bathroom talk about giving her boyfriend a blow job. I didn't know what a blow job was. I believe I am better off for my naivete in the long run, even if it kind of isolated myself from my peers.
