So on Dec. 12, 2009 I went out with one of the many organizations that I am apart  to have an end of the year meet and greet at the teen center in Columbia SC. We were discussing the different topics reagraining from sex, life, and relationships. So while we were in this session they being to give a list of  "what to do and not to do" next year when we returned. The presenter came up this big notebook and being to speak so she then stated that South Carolina prohibits four things. The first of the four laws was,1. Health education classes may NOT include discussion of "alternative sexual lifestyles from heterosexual relationships." So in my mind I was like WOW do they want my little sisters and brothers to die by not teaching them the safe way to have a relationship,sex,ect.....

Me being the only homosexual presented with my organization at the time.... it hit a nerve more like a vien and I was about to explode but I contained my self and contuined to listen... but all I could think about is that South Carolina is so Shallow on gay rights.  Why wouldn't you give teens the space to learn and grow not to be narrow mind. It's the 21st century and time for a change but maybe thats just me.

What do you think...

Almost the same thing happened to me. But I was in school in my health class. They told us that we were not to talk about any other kind of relationships besides hetrosexual. I asked why, and they tried to make some dumb souding excuse that I can't actually remeber. I wanted to keep arguing, but I was getting a lot of dirty looks from the other kids so I shut up.
I think that if they would teach about other kind of relationships besides hetrosexual (Ha) then kids could feel more comfortable about themselves (who wouldn't feel strange if there was a rule against mentioning there sexuality?) and they would be a lot more prepared.
Ugh. It's such a stupid rule. And it's hurtful.

Wow I am so sorry you had to sit through something like that especially by yourself. That is so lame. But even though you were the only out queer person who was there, you are not standing alone Nicole! Everyone in youthresource and mysistahs has your back and is on your side!!!!

Its crazy because with this being a world in which we are to live together and develop together... why would we not teach each so that we can be comfortable. Why leave people in a closed minded state. Because that the end of the day we all have to function together.
