Check out this video. A New York same-sex couple has been together 61 years...and they would love nothing more than the right to get married in their home state.
Since this was recorded, New York became the 6th state to legalize gay marriage. I wonder what this couple is saying now...
I do believe that as we become a more open society we do much more than create equal rights. In having the freedom to openly be you, we also allow the opportunity for generations to bridge together and share/ learn from each other. Our generation of youth is often perceived as a liberal, glassy-eyed, hoard of dreamers, but the reality is that “naivety” (and technology, of course) allows us to speak more openly about how we feel. As we grow and realize that equality for all is much more that an anecdote but is a human right, our passions grow us into a generation of advocates. In that, we allow other generations to relate to, reach out and speak to youth. The more things we can speak about openly and honestly with our older generations, the narrower the generation gap becomes. Luckily for us, we have technology which allows us to speak out and see that our experiences are not so different after all.
It really is the closed minded views of some that make life less enjoyable for others. Not to mention that legalizing gay marriages would (if I had to guess) change the increasing divorce rates... I’m just saying.
