It's the season for giving and with Christmas right around the corner; I couldn't help but to get into the spirit! So, decked out with a Santa Claus hat labeled "Trojan's lil Helper" and "FREE CONDOMS", I, along with the help of my sister and my wonderful coordinator, Mary, set out to give the greatest gift of all-Sexual Health!
This year, I decided that my Christmas gift to the UNC Chapel Hill campus would be uniquely wrapped packages of condoms. So, with the 500 condoms that I received through the Great American Condom Campaign, I decided to get a little creative. With festive ribbons and cards containing the message “This Christmas Break, WRAP IT UP”, we “wrapped” our gift packages. But even with these festive packages, the presentation wasn’t quite complete.
Christmas is a holiday that is filled with images of Santa and his little helpers. Well, this year UNC got a little twist on the typical holiday images. This year, instead of Santa’s little helpers, they were presented with “Trojan’s lil Helpers”! Mary, my sister, and myself decorated Santa Claus hats that advertised our purpose while also labeling as Trojan’s helpers! The ensemble was complete! So, with our individually wrapped packages, Santa bags, and Santa hats, we headed to the heart of UNC’s campus-The PIT.
With it only being 10:00 in the morning when we began our endeavor, things where a little slow. People looked at us a little skeptically and some even tried to avoid us. But we were determined. We had the gift of Christmas and were intent on delivering it! By 10:30 we had developed a rhythm. Our enthusiasm and our drive to deliver condoms surprised people and slowly people began to come around. Though we still received an occasional rejection, more and more people began to accept our gifts and some with a great amount of enthusiasm and appreciation.
By 11:50, the 500 condoms that we had neatly wrapped were all gone and our Santa bags were empty! We had delivered our gift of sexual health to the UNC campus and along the way we even got to promote our cause to those select people that inquired our purpose. Not only that but a journalist from France stopped to talk to us about what we were doing and is planning on including us an article that she is writing!
This Christmas, I had a special gift to deliver to the UNC campus and with the help of Mary, my little sister, Trojan and the GACC, I was successful in doing so!
