Recently, Senate President Peter Shumlin and House Speaker Shap Smith of the Vermont State Congress announced their intentions to pass a bill to bring gay marriage to their state.
This is an exciting step toward equality for our nation, and I sincerely hope that the bill passes. So what can we do to help this important cause? First, write a letter or an e-mail to Senators Shumlin and Smith, thanking them for their leadership in this effort. I’ve provided their addresses below. Next, write to Vermont Governor Jim Douglas, urging him to support the passing of this bill to insure equality for all of Vermont’s citizens. His address is below as well.
Also, if you live in Vermont, or live close by, you can partake in the public hearing on March 18, from 6:30-8:00pm in Montpelier, VT. You can sign up to ride to the event on one of the Equality Busses, leaving from several locations all over the state. You can find out more about the Equality Bus here: http://eqfed.org/vfmtf/events/attend_hearing/details.tcl
It only takes a few minutes to write an e-mail or a letter, and the cause is certainly worth it. I hope you join me in this effort.
I also hope that in the years to come, a state without gay marriage will be the exception, not the “rule“.
