Education is the major agent for change towards advanced and sustainable development. It lays the foundation for diverse positive initiatives; and helps create civilized and orderly citizens. Besides, education has the potential to empower women and make them a part of global action. The distribution and quality of education differs across different countries depending on the economical setup of the country. Consequently in Ethiopia the general overview of education is characterized like this: Ethiopia is a country with 74 million people composed of different ages and sex.

The status of education in Ethiopia has been affected by various factors, like historical events, economic level, political unrests, and social acceptance. In Ethiopia Education is a recent phenomenon. There were no formal schools prior to 1960, instead the church served as an educational institution and was instrumental in imparting education. The last emperor of Ethiopia that is Haileselassie introduced modern education in the late 1960.s however its prevalence was insignificant and as a result raised the rate of illiteracy.

The cost of education in Ethiopia varies according to the type and the standard of schooling. However, generally speaking it may be said that the cost of education is comparatively cheaper to other African Nations. In Ethiopia about 80% of the population lives in rural areas where they are unable to meet the high costs of educational facilities .They lead a life which is solely based on subsistence and hence the government has introduced incentives that are aimed at assisting the rural inhabitants of Ethiopia which exempts them from paying tuition fee.

Nevertheless the education in these rural areas is extremely poor, and the consequences of poor education have affected Ethiopian girls greatly, as a result of inability to easily access schools in rural areas. Girls in Ethiopia find it very difficult to travel long distances to reach school as they are vulnerable

to many dangers. Though there are efforts to overcome these problems, it is only through the active participation of various entities that the problem would be eradicated.

On the flip side of the Ethiopian education system, urban areas seem to enjoy a good quality of education. Schools in the urban Areas of Ethiopia enjoy benefits of experienced teachers and the luxury of educational materials. Currently, the distribution and quality of every level of education is improving from time to time although, there is much left to be done with regards to constructing schools close to the inhabitants, providing quality education in line with the provision of facilities, and giving standardized and well-qualified education.

In 2005, primary education is reach at covering 79.2% and it shows 10% growth relative to the previous year. In 2006 first level education reached 89.41% and secondary level education reached 30.9%. And the technical and vocational education shows a considerable change .Number of students has increase from 3000 to110,000. There are about 100,000 university students are currently enrolled in governmental institutions and 91,000 students are learning in private institutions. One point worth noting is that the gap in the distribution of education among boys and girls is narrowing by 10%. Although the statistics project development a lot still needs to be done to enhance the educational system in Ethiopia. The weight of the population in schools need to expand and made available in every nook and corner of the country .The literacy rate needs to go up and there Need to be more literacy awareness campaigns. There are too many Ethiopians out there whose minds are sadly crippled by harmful practices, and too many of them have lost their way and don’t have the means to Unravel their hidden potentialities.
