Last Friday, we went to visit some of the projects around ALELTU area of Oromia Regional State in Ethiopia where by young people in small towns get together to form HIVAIDS, clubs in their vicinity to bring about change in their community in areas of Sexual Reproductive and Health issues.
One of the club we have managed to see is called ‘Bilichta’ this club is a community based club whether by interested young people came together to with the help of Talent Youth Association, they design, manage and implement diverse projects through drama, musics, coffee ceremony, counseling and condom distribution and so on.
The other club we have seen is called FIKIR GELILA Sexual and Reproductive Club, this club is also a community based club and it’s composed with both young men and female volunteers in the area. They also use same methodology with the former club in imparting their message to the community.
These clubs are located in very small rural towns, where by large number of people engaged in traditional agriculture. The town has limited resources and less infrastructural development. Hence communication is very difficult. These young people also do not have internet access to interact with their peers and partners across the country.
In a place were by there is so much poverty and people travel long ways to pursue secondary education at times female students cannot continue further as a result of the distance and many of the households base their livelihoods with traditional rain fed agriculture, it takes courage, commitment and dedication to teach the community on issues of SRH and HIV/AIDS.  In way these young volunteers are developing leadership abilities and they also have strong bond with the local government bodies like the health centers, youth and sport bureau. They mainly teach the people in local gathering and meetings like ‘Idir’ whereby they can access the community. The local young people are also attracted in the work of these young people. This is mainly, because there are no major recreational centers or libraries for the young people in the area. These clubs organize music and drama shows as way of entertainment and also learning ground  for the young. The work they are doing is very much visible and impacting lot of people in positive way. as a long term plan these clubs are aiming in organized as an association level that works locally with the people.
However, those young people also have challenges. Some of their challenges are poor communications, lack of materials like clothing, computers and other general developmental issues.
Talent youth association along the line with others is helping these clubs in capacity building, training and  project follow ups.

Ministerial Conference

Draft Commitment Statement

The ministerial conference was inaugurated October 24-25. The ministers have passed 6 point commitment statements in which number 5 deals with:

To Ratify, as necessary the African Youth Charter and implement its plan of Action: increase investments and allocate adequate resources for the review, development and implementation of appropriate policies and strategies that are conducive for protecting and empowering youth , including quality education and skills development: access to quality reproductive health information and services: and creation of gainful employment opportunities, and ensure youth participation at all levels, thereby realizing the demographic dividend.

The international Parliamentarian Conference on the implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action October 27-28

On this particular meeting there were youth representatives from the Youth Coalition, UNFPA/LO youth volunteers (bringing in the African Youth Position) and also there were young parliamentarians representing their country delegation at the meeting.

There was a parallel roundtable discussion one amongst the other is:

Do the Youth today have better access to Reproductive Health than 15 years ago?

There was a fruitful discussion with the parliamentarians and the youth coming together face to face. They have managed to come up with a one point declaration  to be adopted by the parliamentarians.

Over all, the African Youth position  paper has provided the African Youth Charter to gain a huge momentum and we believe we have worked out the best with both the experts meeting and parilamenterian meetins and we were able to bring  and also push our issue to the tabel and work with others in getting our voice heard becuase:

Education is the major agent for change towards advanced and sustainable development. It lays the foundation for diverse positive initiatives; and helps create civilized and orderly citizens. Besides, education has the potential to empower women and make them a part of global action. The distribution and quality of education differs across different countries depending on the economical setup of the country. Consequently in Ethiopia the general overview of education is characterized like this: Ethiopia is a country with 74 million people composed of different ages and sex.

The status of education in Ethiopia has been affected by various factors, like historical events, economic level, political unrests, and social acceptance. In Ethiopia Education is a recent phenomenon. There were no formal schools prior to 1960, instead the church served as an educational institution and was instrumental in imparting education. The last emperor of Ethiopia that is Haileselassie introduced modern education in the late 1960.s however its prevalence was insignificant and as a result raised the rate of illiteracy.

The cost of education in Ethiopia varies according to the type and the standard of schooling. However, generally speaking it may be said that the cost of education is comparatively cheaper to other African Nations. In Ethiopia about 80% of the population lives in rural areas where they are unable to meet the high costs of educational facilities .They lead a life which is solely based on subsistence and hence the government has introduced incentives that are aimed at assisting the rural inhabitants of Ethiopia which exempts them from paying tuition fee.
