So, I thought the Easter egg hunt would go well. But this is crazy. Of 100 eggs. 61 were turned in the first day! It was GREAT! So then one girl got overly offended and returned her bag which contained three condoms, a "Just Wear It" sticker, and an instruction sheet that was included in the Trojan box. She returned and as she walked away, I heard her say "That is disgusting!" Everyone knew what the hunt was for. If you didn't know that this is what it was about, you could have asked. I'm trying to do a good thing here at Chesapeake College and people got offended. In the Catholic or Christian related religions, Easter is about the rebirth of Jesus Christ. I know this. I'm Pagan, but I respect them. But these students have spit in my face. I don't mean for them to think I was disrespectful, but that is how they saw it.
Anyway, so we had 39 eggs that I thought were missing. Turns out that the one girl that got offended told all of her friends and they found that rest of the eggs and threw them out. Didn't just leave them be. Just threw them out. I have put in months of preperation for this event. Months of advertising and telling people about this. And it was thrown in my face. THAT is disrespectful.
I need to know what to do. I was going to double the number of Easter eggs for next spring... Now I'm not sure if I should bring the Condom Campaign back at all...
So it is almost time for the Easter Egg hunt at Chesapeake College. I have all the bags set up. After I got done with all the bags, I remembered that Daniel Packard was attending the school to do a live group sex therapy show. I decided it was the perfect chance to hand out the last 30 or 40 condoms. So after all the eggs have been found, there won't be any condoms left. YAY! So technically I didn't just hand them out in a set number of days. I spread out the use of the box over time. I hope the hunt goes well but I'm sure it will. It seems to be very popular. I can't wait! I will definently be reporting back on the egg hunt. Wish me luck!
YAY! My box of condoms have finally arrived. I'm so happy about that. However, it was quite a shock to find that my father had started to cut the box open to see what was in it. That sucks big time. He can't just leave it alone. Anywho. I have this minorly O.C.D. thing where I have to separate the condoms by type and count how many of each there are. Don't ask me why because I don't know. I hope to distribute them this coming Monday and Tuesday during college hours so that we can take over the campus once again.
It did somewhat upset me to find that most of the condoms I had set out last semster had been picked up by the SGA and disposed or donated to other school organizations. Come on now. That's just not cool. SO WHAT if you are taking pictures of the school and you don't want condoms everywhere. it's called photoshop!
I really hope SGA doesn't get in the way of the Easter Egg Hunt this semester. YOu all know I would be calling my Student Life DIrector and demanding that they back the frick off.
I can't wait for this round of condoms to come in the mail! I have already gotten an event set up for the semester. For the week before and the week after Easter, we are having an Easter Egg Hunt! The school is going over my proposal and everything has been set up. The Student Life Director already has posters getting printed so that when it gets closer, they can be hung up around the school.
Everyone on campus has heard something about it so hopefully it will be as successful as last semester. I don't plan on holding onto all the condoms for Easter. I plan to hand out a significant amount right before Valentine's Day. As my friends at school would say "No more Cupid babies!!!"
I distributed all 500 condoms in 5 days. I would have done more such as Halloween or fall break, but the box did not last that long. I did attend on campus activities and hand out condoms. Many students are timid and won't admit that they need condoms. I know this so I had a male friend put a handful in the boys' bathrooms and I put some in the girls' bathrooms. I also left them on the tables in the lounges or in the game room. I tried to work out something with the student life director. We had made posters and posted them up around the school. i also put a poster on my book bag so people could tell I was the one handing the condoms out. I was going to set up a table in our community center but the box didn't last long enough to be able to do that. Every condom was handed out with a fact sheet.
Next semester, I hope to be picked again and continue being the SafeSite at Chesapeake College. We are talking about having a Condom Easter Egg Hunt next semster. I already found someone to dress as the Trojan man. He might even wear bunny ears!
So, the title says it all. I was able to hand out ALL 500 condoms to my campus in 5 days. I'm not sure if I should be happy that people are having safe sex becuase of me or if I should be disgusted by the number of people having possibly unprotected sex that are at my school. I feel good that I did it though. I would rather people be safe than dropping out of school because they got pregnant or extremely sick.
My Student Life Director was surprised when I came up to him to show him the empty box that was half full when I arrived to campus today (October 24, 2011). I walked up to some classmates and they started gasping when I turned the box upside down and nothing fell out.
I have to give thanks to the few male friends I have on campus that took handfulls into the boy's bathroom to place them on the sinks and counters.
So, this is my first semester as a SafeSite! I'm so glad that I got to be picked. I started writing emails to staff members about setting up a table on my campus and posting posters on the bulletin boards. I didn't think that this was going to go so well. On the first day that I took part of the box to school, I had taken 84 condoms to distribute. I ran out before my second class of the day. Then on the second day, I had taken another stack and I had ran out again. I only had 70 in my bag and distributed them all! I've already got another bag ready to go and I'm hoping to hand all of them out.
What was REALLY cool was that one day I was sitting in the game room with some students and a member of the SGA came in looking for me because he had gotten a call from our college's president and she wanted to hang up posters in some of the offices. Everyone I was with thought I was in trouble, so they started to cheer when they heard what she wanted to do.
