As much as i might make fun of America and it's peoples, commenting on its citizens' inability to properly speak the English Language, their annoying superiority complexes, and of course, the rudeness, i am glad to be here. I am happy that this nation embraces diversity to some extent; i know that hate crimes, discrimination and violence occur everyday all over the country. Before i came here, i knew next to nothing about racism, sexism etc. I knew about the problems in my own country - the starvation, inter-ethnic rivalry, lack of infrastructure and social amenities xyz - and even though i had family who were American citizens, i never really knew much about what went on here.
I am glad to be alive in this glorious month of June when we celebrate Gay and Lesbian Pride. I think it's wonderful that there is an entire month dedicated to this worthy cause, just like Black History Month. Here in Baltimore, the GLCCB (GLBT Community Center of Baltimore and Central Maryland) will sponsor the 35th annual Baltimore Pride festival, "A free outdoor event attracting 20 – 30,000 celebrants every year, Baltimore Pride is the largest GLBT festival in Maryland. Spanning one weekend and consisting of a high-energy downtown block party and a more sedate outdoor festival in one of Baltimore’s largest public parks, Baltimore Pride is an enormous undertaking made possible by the efforts of a committed group of individuals and volunteers" (glccb.org). Baltimore Pride will take place on the 19th & 20th this year.
The fact that we can celebrate events like these says a lot about the world we live in today. The fact that we are still debating certain issues also says a lot. However, i am glad that the work of the many activists who fought and are still fighting for equal rights counts for something. The world needs to understand that individuals should not be discriminated against simply because there is something different about them or because their opinions/lifestyles do not match society's blueprint.
So celebrate wherever you are. The month of June is beautiful. Participate in Gay Pride events wherever you are. Show your support for the gay community. In the words of Harvey Milk, "Burst down those closet doors once and for all, and stand up and start to fight."
