In 2 days, Philadelphia will be voting on an ordinance concerning sick days. The Promoting Healthy Families And Workplaces Act would allow for workers in large companies (more than 11 employees) to claim up to 7 days in sick time per year and workers in smaller companies (less than 11 employees, not counting chains with 15 or more separate establishments) to claim up to 4 days in sick time. The bill number is 080474.

What is interesting about this bill is the definition of family member:

(7) “Family member” means:

(a) A biological, adopted or foster child, stepchild or legal ward or a child
to whom the employee stands in loco parentis.
(b) A biological, foster, stepparent or adoptive parent or legal guardian of
an employee or an employee’s spouse or a person who stood in loco parentis when the
employee was a minor child.
(c) A person to whom the employee is legally married under the laws of
Pennsylvania.
(d) A grandparent or spouse of a grandparent;
(e) A grandchild;
(f) A biological, foster, or adopted sibling or spouse of a biological, foster
or adopted sibling;
(g) A Life Partner as defined in Section 9-1102 of this Code;
(h) Any other individual related by blood or affinity whose close
association with the employee is the equivalent of a family relationship.
The term "life partner" means those who are in domestic partnerships within the city of Philadelphia, and "in loco parentis" can mean:
LGBT parents who do not have a legal or biological relationship to their children
The bill currently has two sponsors, Councilperson Darrell Clark and Councilperson Bill Greenlee, and will be heard this Thursday, June 16, at 10am. City Hall, Room 400.

A list of LGBT organizations that are supporting this ordinance includes:

Liberty City Democrats
Mazzoni Center
William Way
Action AIDS
Philadelphia AIDS Fund
Philadelphia Family Pride
AIDS Law Project
GALAEI
Philadelphia Fight

Other cities which have sick pay ordinances are Washington DC and San Francisco.

We do not know which way the bill is going to go, but I will most certainly try to push it and will be trying to get to see several councilmembers tomorrow.

 It's great that they're being inclusive. I wish that the number of sick days was higher, though.
