I would like to end this year on a positive note; the organizers of the Philadelphia Trans* March had a great idea and decided to hold a clothing bank for the holidays geared towards the trans community. While it may seem as if it is something minor, this is a major step in a "for us, by us" philosophy which is sadly more necessary than ever. Though this has not been much of an issue in Philadelphia as in other cities, many clothing banks are run by religious organizations with "traditional" views of gender, which may make it hard for low income trans people to participate in.
The clothing bank is now being held Sundays and Thursdays from 3pm-5pm at the William Way Community Centre, Spirit of the Leopard room.
As for me, just yesterday, December 29, another major milestone in my transition happened around this event. While at my parents' house in New Jersey, I decided that perhaps there may be a transman out there who would be interested in my old boy clothes. I could no longer stomach having them in my old room or even in my possession, and yesterday, I took about 50 lbs of male clothing which I had worn over the years, and gave them away. I was free from this huge burden, and no more would I have to look at the clothes that made me look ugly and most of all, did not match my true gender identity.
I leave you all with a picture of me, wearing an ultrafeminine tie-neck blouse and skirt (in contrast to the clothing in my bag), smiling as I finally shed a major part of my past.
