ENDA is a bill that, although weak compared to the American Equality Bill, would still move LGBTIQ rights forward; it puts in anti-discrimination protections for both sexual orientation and gender identity for companies with 15 or more employees. It has been stalled in both houses, even with a Democratic majority in both houses and a LGBTIQ friendly president.
GetEqual has just announced its ENDA Summer Campaign, in which legislators on the fence will be targetted. I encourage all Amplifiers who care about this issue to contact your legislators if you live in any of the targetted districts.
In The House:
Needed are 218 votes to pass. As of today, August 21, 2010, there were:
196 sponsors or cosponsors
4 Yes
34 Leaning Yes
173 Leaning No
2 No
26 Unknown.
So, thus, we have 200 committed, and we need 18 more.
In The Senate:
Needed are 50 votes to pass, As of today, August 21, 2010, there were:
44 sponsors or cosponsors
7 Yes
9 Leaning Yes
1 Undecided
36 Leaning No
2 No
1 Unknown
So, thus, we have the votes in the Senate, but it is 1) whether it will be allowed to be put to a vote, and 2) if there is a filibuster
I will be writing more in depth in the coming days about the legislators on the fence and the dynamics that will make or break ENDA.
