I just got word that FIVE Senate candidates: Christine O'Donnell (DE), Joe Miller (AK), Rand Paul (KY), Ken Buck (CO), and Sharron Angle (NV), all Republican/Tea Party, oppose abortion, even for those who are pregnant from rape or incest. Even National Right to Life concedes that 62% of Americans support the exemption.
This is not only an anti-woman position, but is also extremely ableist. Many women who get sexually assaulted get PTSD from the incident. This PTSD tends to manifest itself in certain experiences/things being triggering to the survivor. Now, one could say, for example, give away the bracelet they were wearing when they were assaulted; however, in the case of unwanted pregnancy, that potential "trigger" is growing inside the woman, and it is imperative that her wishes be followed and never questioned!!!
But you say that "the woman could just carry the baby to term and drop it off for adoption, no questions asked". Not only does it harken back to the triggers, but pregnancy, whether wanted or not, changes one life over the course of nine months. I am talking about missed work, missed social gatherings, etc. etc.
And what irks me most is that two of these candidates are WOMEN. What if they were sexually assaulted (or someone either the men or women mentioned here knew). I am sure that, if need be, they would be getting an abortion. It angers me that an element of ableism has creeped into issues revolving around abortion and sexual assault.
