In Ethiopia, there are a lot of traditional mal practices and believes. FGM is one of the most known harmful traditional practices in the country. The practice differs from place to place and also its outcome is also different from place to place.

While practicing FGM there is high chance of infection with viral diseases because of the fact that the tools are not sterilized.

By nature, the reproduction organ of a woman is elastic and it is helps when the women gave birth. For a women passed through FGM giving birth will not be easy. Not forgetting that she will lack pleasure during sexual intercourse.

In one way or another practice of FGM got legitimacy by our community. To alleviate these incorrect attitudes we /youth/ have to work hard to make change in the attitude of our community members in general and male count parts to stop saying ‘’I don’t want to marry her, if she isn’t circumcised.’’

There is a concerted effort by both the government and the civil society to ban this act. The government in the new family law and the revised criminal law indicated that FGM is a crime. But this has to be coupled with wide range of information and awareness creation programs. It would be very difficult to criminalize or jail people who are living in one district. Education will play a vital role in this circumstance. Impressive results are gained in the past few years with this intervention to lower the number of FGM cases in the country.  The first lady spear heading the campaign to end FGM not only here in Ethiopia but all over Africa. The community conversation program in which community members gather together to solve their problems on regular bases is strengthening the overall effort of eradicating the practice of FGM. In some societies the community will take strict measures on family who do practice FGM. If this good practice continues I hope in the near future FGM will become a history!!!
