Today I visited The City Club of Cleveland's Friday Forum. The forum was a continuation of World AIDS Day and was addressed by The Office of National AIDS Policy Director, Jeffrey S. Crowley, who spoke on the National AIDS Strategy. One of the things I learned from this forum was that this strategy is not about the federal government but the people. It focuses on what they want and what they feel will most benefit them.

From the directors visit to the Virgin Islands he found out they put a huge stigma on HIV/AIDS and the deny that any of their residents are gay. Its just not a very open place when it comes to those topics. Very few people that came to the town hall meeting were willing to speak on these issues; even after much urging.

Director Crowley also mentioned that it would take some time to implement everything the people are asking for and that it would not automatically erase the problems we're facing. That much I'm sure we all know. One of his focuses is fully addressing each of the many sub-divisions of groups that require attention.

During the Q&A session that followed Director Crowley responded to a question about peer education. He voiced his support of the youths need to play a bigger role in the implementation of the coming strategy; partly because he understands that youth are more likely to be influenced by their peers.

I was able to ask a question; it centered around my education in the Cleveland Municipal School District and how it is the only K-12 comp. sex ed. program in the nation. I wanted to know if they were looking at something similar for school districts nation wide. He told me that he'd heard a lot about it from many people on his visits here and though he wasn't sure if it was a good model for the nation, he would be willing to look into it.

Look out for updated information on the National AIDS Strategy in the beginning of the year.
