WHAT IS MENTORSHIP?
Mentorship refers to a personal developmental relationship in which a more experienced or more knowledgeable person helps a less experienced or less knowledgeable person. In other words we can say MENTORSHIP is the process of harnessing experience and knowledge and sharing it with others. It is about people learning from each other and applying the learning. Mentorship is a nurturing process, which provides the opportunity for more experienced individuals, to share their professional knowledge and expertise with others who are less experienced. A mentor is someone who helps individuals reaches their full potential by guiding and encouraging them to excel and grow. A mentor inspires, counsels and encourages the mentee in developing their vision for the future and skills needed to advance on a career path. A mentee gains insight and access to new skills and knowledge through the mentor’s example and support.
Who is a Mentor?
While there are many different ways of answering the question of who is a mentor, a basic definition with which we can begin is that a mentor is a special kind of helper who works with others in a positive, constructive way so that both mentor and protégé have the potential to grow through the relationship. Also A mentor can be a person who may push you to do something creative and constructive for your personal achievement which he/she will treat you doing the work to fill as if he owns the project, meanwhile all he is trying to show you is do the best you can while you can. Here are some tips for a good Mentor:
• A person who is well respected and with high self-esteem.
• A person who has a good relationship with his fellow peers and protégé’s.
• A person with good reputation life.
• A good listener, good adviser, and responsible.
What does a mentor help with?
Some of the things that a mentor might do to help a friend who's having a hard time might include:
• providing information and advice based on your experience and ideas;
• encouraging him or her to take a healthy, positive, and constructive risk;
• 'being there' just to listen and understand;
• offering honest and positive feedback;
• planning and thinking with her or him about how to work through a challenging or confusing situation;
• sharing different points of view to understand an issue or problem from as many different ideas and ways of thinking as possible; and,
• Making use of multiple perspectives to base decisions in choosing from the best of all the options, creating an action plan, and following through with that plan.
Not only that a MENTOR also Helping, providing, encouraging, being there, offering, planning, sharing, and making? These are all things we do to help one another as we grow, learn, and change through everyday living and learning. And, in large part, this list provides another dimension of understanding who is a mentor and what he or she does. But, we need to go further to understand what it means to become a skilled mentor.
